We know that general practice is a tough place to be right now, with the national shortage of GPs, the impact of the Covid pandemic and the growing expectations set upon general practice services to deliver more and more.
Dealing with this day-in, day-out is not easy and, let’s be honest, it’s not much fun either! We know because we do it – we are an organisation run by a team of GPs that have been there and got the t-shirt.
That’s why we offer something different. The chance for a break from the relentlessness and isolation of community general practice by mixing it up with the fascinating and immensely rewarding work of prison healthcare. Whether you’re looking for a complete break from community general practice, or just something else to do alongside it, we have options that will suit you.

HMP Eastwood Park is a truly unique environment. Women account for only 5% of the total prison population in the UK and there are only a handful of female prisons to house them. We are looking for motivated and aspirational registered healthcare professionals to join our growing team of primary care clinicians. We have opportunities across our five adult prisons and in our secure children’s home. Candidates can opt to work in one or across multiple sites, depending on their preference.
This isn’t primary care as you think you know it; this is prison primary care.
In the prison setting, we have a responsibility to offer our patients the same primary care services you would expect to receive from your community GP practice… But we do so much more than this…
When our patients need emergency care, we respond
When our patients are in withdrawal from drugs or alcohol, we help them detox
When our patients are in crisis, we work with mental health colleagues to keep them safe
We do this because we care about making a difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable, traumatised and marginalised people within our society. Most of our patients will be released back into the community, and it is our mission, our duty and our privilege to help them to be better, think better and live better.
The time a person spends in prison is the ideal (and often only) time for their physical and mental health needs to be addressed. It’s an opportunity for us to work with them to improve their overall wellbeing and to set them on the right track to manage their own health in future.
Leaving prison healthy and well is a key factor in reducing the likelihood that a person will reoffend. It is with immense pride that we undertake our part in helping people to break the cycle of offending by restoring them to good health and equipping them with the support and tools they need to maintain this.
We welcome applications from newly qualified and soon-to-be qualified candidates.
Whether you’re a registered nurse, paramedic or other allied healthcare professional, we could have the ideal role for you, so why not apply or get in touch and see what opportunities await you?
